Redwood Outpost: storm the shield bunker

Every other battle in Any War has already happened. This one hasn't. A strike team, a dug-in garrison, and a shield bunker hidden among the tallest trees on Earth.

A real forest, a future war

The war is invented, but the ground is not. Redwood Outpost is fought on a real grove of coast redwoods in Humboldt County, in the far north of California, built like every Any War battlefield from OpenStreetMap data. This is the heart of redwood country, where the last great stands of old-growth forest still grow along the rivers and ridges near the Pacific.

The tallest trees on Earth

Coast redwoods are the tallest living things on the planet. Mature trees routinely pass 90 metres, and the tallest known, in Redwood National Park to the north, stands at about 116 metres, taller than a 30-storey building. Some are more than 2,000 years old. Their bark can be a foot thick and is full of tannins that help it resist fire and rot, which is why so many of these trees have outlived the fires that swept through their forests.

An old-growth redwood grove is a strange place to fight. The trunks are wider than a car. Fallen giants lie across the forest floor for centuries. Ferns grow waist-high, and summer fog rolls in off the ocean. Sight lines are short, and cover is everywhere, if you know where to find it.

What you command

You lead the strike team on the attack. The enemy garrison is dug in around the shield bunker in prepared positions, and the forest is the only thing between you and their guns.

Use the dense old-growth cover. Sneak your squads forward from trunk to trunk, pin the defenders with fire, and push onto the objective before they can recover. It plays like every Any War battle, with the same rules of cover, suppression and morale, in an era where the weapons have moved on and the trees have not.
